It provides the financial support needed for the Foundation, which runs the day care centre and supports other centres in the poorer districts of Pokhara. Over 100 poor children are supported by the Foundation to go to school, with their school fees being paid, along with books and uniforms. In addition, recently the Butterfly Foundation has provided micro-finance loans to a couple of women who have started weaving as a way to make income. Donors sometimes ask the Butterfly Foundation to manage a range of projects like building a bridge, renovating a school or providing toilets. The Lodge also acts as a local hub for volunteers whether wanting to help with the day care centre, with its 40+ pre-school children, or on any other project. In this way the Butterfly Lodge is a very good place for people to meet and share experiences on being socially responsible. In addition to this, the Butterfly Lodge conserves energy and water as much as it can. During the monsoon, rainwater harvesting is possible. Rooms are all equipped with energy-saving light bulbs. There are solar panels fitted on the roof for heating water. The usual recycling of glass bottles and tin is practice here and old items not needed by the hotel are given away to the needy, as there is always someone that can use the things.
